"Easy Does It" tells the tale of Greg and a very fresh Easy in the Spring of '05. Easy is Greg's young gelding, just four years old at the time. He was coming off a long winter and not feeling up to helping with the work Greg needed done.
Before we left for the Phippen show in May, Greg wanted to ride fence one last time to make sure the longhorns would stay home while we were away. He saddled up Easy and they were off at long trot for a loop around the pasture. Easy was fresh and not in the mood. He bucked with Greg down the fence line and part way back before he got a little dirty with it. Easy is big colt, mind you, about 16 hands and a good 1,200 lbs. He has been a little bucky, but has always been pretty honest about it. Greg commented on several occasions that if Easy ever decided to get trashy he didn't know if he could stay on. Coming from a bronc rider, that gives one pause. On this spring day, well... Easy got trashy.
He went to buckin' in the creek bottom for a good 15 seconds or so. Greg's cheater strap broke, and got him stretched out a bit. Easy took advantage of the situation, cow kicking Greg in the right heel. The kick shot Greg's foot out of the stirrup, hyper-extending his knee and breaking his heel. Two or three jumps later, Easy walked him out over the front end. Greg kept his grip on the reins all the way to the ground. Easy kept on buckin’ on the end of those reins until Greg spanked him out of his temper fit. Easy's name has hence forth been spoken in a different way.
