Greg Kelsey
A Western Artist Who Has Lived the Life He Sculpts

A Western Eye, A Makers Hand
For Greg Kelsey, art is about showing power. His Western bronzes capture the grit, vigor, and spirit of the cowboy life he knows firsthand. Before he was a sculptor, Greg was a bronc rider, roper, and working cowboy. Those years in the saddle shaped not only his character but also his eye for detail, motion, and truth in his art.
Greg grew up in Oklahoma with art at his fingertips thanks to his mother, an art teacher who encouraged his creativity. Though he once pursued a pre-dental path at the University of Texas at El Paso, life soon pulled him toward rodeo and ranch work across the Southwest. His days on horseback, tending cattle, and testing himself against bucking broncs became a living education in anatomy, strength, and the partnership between humans and animals.
It wasn’t until later, while studying sculpture at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, that Greg recognized art as his true calling. He left school just credits shy of graduation but had already committed himself fully to the pursuit of bronze. With the encouragement of his wife, Terah, Greg built a career out of passion, risk, and persistence. Early on, he apprenticed under respected sculptor Ed Fraughton, refining his technical mastery of bronze and light.
Since then, Greg’s sculptures have become known for their vitality, authenticity, and uncompromising attention to form. From twisting broncs to iconic cowboys, Native figures, wildlife, and even political satire, his work carries a raw energy that reflects his mantra: “You have to notice what’s supposed to be noticed.”
Today, Greg works from his studio in Colorado, where horses and longhorns graze just outside his window. Every day, he draws inspiration from the life he continues to live — a life of grit, honesty, and dedication to both his craft and the Western way of being.
For Greg Kelsey, sculpting is not just about bronze and clay. It’s about vigor. It’s about risk. And it’s about conquering something bigger than yourself.
"I want to learn what's in me. I want to master the medium and bring it across to others. It is what I am meant to do. This is about conquering something bigger than yourself."
